The round bearing retainer that is removed to access the seal is internal on the W124, which is why I had to remove the worm and ball assembly off the shaft. WebNov 13, 2014 · Early boxes with the single metal fill plug used 90wt oil. Later boxes with two plastic plugs used a special grease (but modern MOS2, "moly EP" greases are a good substitute). Some owners use the moly grease in older boxes to minimize leaks. Search for threads on box seals-- there are past and current threads with good info.

A couple of local shops indicated that they will not repair this but opt to install OEm rebuilds of super box options.
